The conflict began when the Defense Department sought to renegotiate contracts to allow AI use for "any lawful use," but the AI lab refused to remove two restrictions: prohibiting mass surveillance of Americans and prohibiting lethal autonomous weapons systems. The judge found that the broad measures imposed on the company were illegal and baseless, stating that invoking national security does not justify punishment of government critics in violation of the First Amendment.
