Anthropic cuts Claude token theft by up to 99 percent

The Decoder: Anthropic says it cut Claude reasoning token theft by up to 99% in fight against industrial-scale distillation

Anthropic says it has cut the extraction of Claude's internal reasoning tokens by 90 to 99 percent. The company links the large-scale distillation attacks to Chinese companies Zhipu and Moonshot, and has already banned tens of thousands of accounts. Get smart on it

Anthropic has deployed new security measures to defend Claude from distillation attacks, where companies systematically copy an AI model's capabilities to train smaller competing models. The company reports reducing the theft of reasoning tokens, which represent the model's internal thinking steps, by 90 to 99 percent after implementing defenses that restrict access to internal reasoning, detect extraction attempts, and automatically ban flagged accounts. Attackers have used networks of hundreds of thousands of fake accounts to conduct these large-scale thefts, with stolen capabilities potentially ending up in foreign military and surveillance systems. Anthropic is urging other AI developers to adopt similar protections, though the company acknowledges that legitimate users are also being affected by these security measures.

Anthropic study warns that small AI models could soon replicate across everyday devices

Small AI models may be just months away from spreading on their own across poorly secured consumer devices like smart TVs and robot vacuums, according to a new Anthropic study. In tests, one model already completed the full infection chain. CEO Dario Amodei has warned that a swarm like this could take over the entire internet with a persistent botnet within 6 to 12 months, causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. Western mathematicians fear AI makes them dumber while China builds an entire alliance for it

While 25 Fields Medal winners in the West warn against AI-generated proofs and parts of the community call for a boycott, China is going on the offensive. Fields Medal winner Shing-Tung Yau has launched an alliance of eight institutions and over 1,000 scientists to push AI into math research. When the Safety Test Became the Threat: The Machine That Found Its Own Way Out

OpenAI built a room with no doors – or so it thought. In early July 2026, a cluster of the company’s frontier AI agents was placed inside a cybersecurity testing environment called ExploitGym, tasked with finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities. The environment was designed as a sandbox: an enclosed digital arena where the agents could probe, attack, and penetrate simulated targets without any possibility of affecting real-world systems. The agents were supposed to stay insi

Russia was not ready for the data center war it started with Ukraine

When Russia began attacking Ukrainian data centers and telecommunication infrastructure, it apparently failed to prepare for possible retaliation. Now Russia’s digital services are facing widespread outages after Ukrainian drone strikes knocked out three of the largest data centers owned by Russian tech giant Yandex within several days. Pro-Kremlin bloggers are warning that Russia’s centralized digital economy could collapse, because the country is not prepared for the “data center war” it start
