
Anthropic founder and CEO Dario Amodei made his views clear about open-weight models and China's growing AI capabilities.
Anthropic's CEO clarified that his company does not support bans on open-weight AI models, responding to industry speculation about government restrictions. His concern is not open-weight models themselves, which he views as beneficial when they lack dangerous capabilities, but rather the risk that authoritarian governments could develop more powerful AI systems to achieve military superiority or enable repression and biological attacks. He advocates instead for restricting access to powerful chips, cracking down on intellectual property theft through distillation, and establishing a global model safety testing organization that would include participation from China.

OpenAI said it has suspended work on some aspects of its upcoming model Astra over concerns about its cybersecurity prowess.
