Tools designed to detect AI-generated writing are becoming widely used by educators and publishers, even though their reliability is questionable. These AI detectors use their own AI models to guess whether text was written by humans or machines, a process described as murkier than traditional plagiarism detection. A survey found that 43 percent of sixth to 12th grade teachers in the US regularly used AI detectors between 2024 and 2025, and some universities had the technology automatically enabled in their systems.
