FERC told grid operators to give data centers a fast lane for interconnections, but it failed to address electricity supply shortages.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ordered major grid operators to fast-track electricity connection requests from data centers and other large power users, requiring operators to show these facilities can connect to the transmission system in a timely manner. Data centers will pay their own interconnection costs, and grid operators must also consider alternative transmission technologies and accommodate behind-the-meter power solutions. This matters because electricity demand from data centers is expected to nearly triple through 2035, straining grid operators that have faced connection backlogs so severe that power plant connection requests now exceed the total capacity of existing power plants. The directive addresses a significant competitive concern raised by government officials, though it does not solve the underlying shortage of generating capacity, and comes as wholesale electricity rates have increased substantially across many regions due to demand pressures.

Last year we featured a lengthy interview with tech journalist/science fiction author Cory Doctorow about his book, Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What To Do About It. The prolific Doctorow is back with a provocative new book that serves as a follow-up of sorts, focusing on AI and related issues: The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI. Doctorow doesn't actually enjoy talking about AI, but he's constantly being asked to comment on it. "I made the tactical error of b
