OpenAI is launching its decision model to the world. Can it compete with the original Jev?
OpenAI has made its Decisions API model widely available to all customers, entering a growing market for fast, cheap decision models that quickly classify information and make choices with confidence ratings. This type of model, which emerged from a startup's Jev offering that became a major company valuation, operates faster and cheaper than traditional large language models, making it useful for replacing those models in various software workflows. The Decisions API uses OpenAI's ChatGPT Luna model reconfigured for speed and cost, reducing decision time from multiple seconds to around 100-180 milliseconds, with early customers like Box and Datadog demonstrating significant improvements in their applications. The decision model market is now competitive, with multiple companies releasing offerings and various benchmarks showing different models performing best depending on the use case, though what defines a good decision model remains unclear beyond whether it works for a specific workload.
