Google DeepMind: Beyond tree cover: mapping the world’s forest types
A global map categorizing every 10-meter patch of land on Earth into distinct forest types.
A new global map classifies every small patch of forest on Earth into six distinct types, from primary forests to plantations to tree-crop farms, at 10-meter resolution. This matters because different forest types store different amounts of carbon and biodiversity, yet traditional maps only show whether trees are present without distinguishing between a natural rainforest and a single-species plantation. A time series tracking yearly changes from 2017 to 2025 reveals not just where forests disappear but what replaces them, making visible changes like natural forest converted to plantation that would otherwise look green on standard maps. The map was validated against expert assessments at over 9,000 sites worldwide and is now freely available to help governments, companies, and conservation groups implement deforestation regulations and protect natural forests.

Browse AI courses on MavenAi2, the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, today released a satellite map embedding model called OlmoEarth v1.3 and precomputed annual embeddings for the whole planet at various resolutions with a browser-based map-making tool. The model compresses a year of satellite observations into a numerical fingerprint for each 10-by-10-meter patch of ground at the smallest resolution, […] The post Ai2 releases OlmoEarth v1.3 state-of-the-art AI-ready satellite embeddings for the whole pl
