TRG DataCenters’ August 2026 ranking places Virginia in the lead, while states with abundant power, low-carbon electricity, and favorable water conditions gain ground.
A recent survey of US states ranks their readiness to host artificial intelligence data centers based on factors including power supply, electricity carbon intensity, water availability, and existing AI infrastructure. Virginia topped the ranking despite having less mapped AI capacity than some other states, primarily because the electrical grid serving its facilities has much lower carbon emissions than competing regions. The findings suggest that states can compete for AI data center investment through a combination of reliable power, low-carbon electricity generation, and favorable water conditions, potentially creating a more geographically diverse market as AI demand expands rather than concentrating development only in established data center hubs.
