Data centers use protection systems that automatically disconnect from the grid when they detect voltage or frequency problems that could damage equipment, but when thousands of megawatts disconnect simultaneously, it creates a system-wide disruption that the grid must then manage. The grid remained reliable after this event, but it was the largest sudden load transfer the operator has experienced, highlighting how data centers are becoming significant variables in power system stability rather than simply predictable sources of electricity demand. The proposed ride-through requirements would be similar to rules already applied to power generation resources and would address how facilities protect themselves, how their onsite generation behaves during disturbances, and how they reconnect to the grid.
