Flapping Airplanes, an artificial intelligence research lab founded about a year ago, raised $1 billion in funding at a $6 billion valuation, though it has not yet released any commercial product. The lab is developing AI models that require significantly less data than current frontier systems by creating new graphics processing unit primitives and what it calls a megakernel framework, which allows a GPU to run an entire program as a single kernel to reduce processing delays. The company's approach aims to make AI dramatically more cost-efficient and data-efficient, which investors believe could address growing demand for AI in fields like robotics, trading, and life sciences where compute and data supply remain constrained. The funding round was led by two investment firms and included participation from several major technology investors and venture capital firms.
