Seed founders struggle as Series A funding concentrates in AI

Crunchbase News: Jumbo Series A Rounds Hiding The Real Squeeze On Seed Startups

Global startups have closed at least 114 Series A rounds of $100 million or more so far this year, Crunchbase reported in late September, and more than 70% of them went to AI companies. Get smart on it

Large funding rounds for Series A startups, particularly in AI, are masking a deeper problem for early-stage companies seeking their first institutional investment. While seed funding amounts have grown to approximately three times their 2018 levels, the percentage of seed-funded companies that advance to Series A has dropped dramatically, with only 16% of 2024 seed companies progressing beyond that stage compared to 55% or higher in 2020. Series A investors now typically require companies to demonstrate $2 million to $4 million in annual recurring revenue, a revenue-focused bar that requires seed companies to build strong sales capabilities alongside their products in order to reach this threshold.
