Edge Sound Research has raised funding to build audio technology that helps physical AI systems understand their surroundings by isolating specific sounds and combining them with visual and sensor data. The challenge the company addresses is that audio comes through microphones as overlapping channels rather than as distinct objects, making it difficult for AI to identify which sound belongs to which source, much like distinguishing a basketball dribble from crowd noise in an arena. The technology works by creating a digital map of sensor locations and using machine learning to pair audio with visual information to identify objects in real time, with applications ranging from live sports broadcasting to autonomous vehicles that need to detect approaching emergency sirens. This approach aims to give physical AI systems capabilities more similar to human perception, which naturally integrates sight, sound, and physical sensation simultaneously.
