Deepgram, a voice AI company, has acquired Daily, the maker of Pipecat, an open-source framework that manages voice and video streams along with speech-to-text, language models, and text-to-speech components while reducing latency. The voice AI sector is consolidating as companies make strategic acquisitions to strengthen their positions, and both companies have committed to keeping Pipecat open-source. Deepgram's CEO stated the acquisition enables developers to build voice agents with different models and allows the company to explore areas beyond voice through Pipecat's real-time communication capabilities. The deal also includes the launch of an open protocol for voice agents that Deepgram co-developed with the Pipecat team to define metadata and instructions for how voice agents should function.
