Analysts say the deal will help AMD inform future chip designs as AI evolves.
AMD is acquiring an AI research lab in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately 8.2 billion dollars. The acquisition aims to help AMD co-design hardware and software for emerging AI applications such as robotics and physical AI by gaining access to the lab's expertise in world models, which simulate interactive 3D environments using text, images, and video. Analysts say the deal matters because it allows AMD to understand future chip requirements as AI technology evolves, and it positions the company to compete with Nvidia's early lead in physical AI through platforms and models like Cosmos, Isaac, Omniverse, and GR00T. The acquisition is valued primarily for its intellectual property and talent, including the lab's CEO who will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist.
