Chipmaker AMD and world models company World Labs announced that AMD will acquire the AI company by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval. The transaction is valued at $8.2 billion. In 2024, computer vision scientist Fei-Fei Li founded World Labs with fellow researchers Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, with $230 million in funding, some of which came from AMD. AMD is acquiring an AI startup that develops world models, which are AI systems trained on video data to simulate and predict the physical world. The $8.2 billion deal is expected to close by year's end and brings research talent and technology to AMD, including founders who will take leadership roles at the chipmaker. World models have applications in content creation tools and generating synthetic data for robot training, an area where AMD's competitor Nvidia currently holds a strong advantage. This acquisition reflects AMD's effort to compete in an AI chip landscape dominated by Nvidia by gaining expertise in how AI workloads are evolving.
