Amazon Web Services has launched a new internal organization dedicated to forward-deployed engineers, with $1 billion in internal resources committed to the effort. These engineers will work temporarily within client companies to deploy AI agents and systems, with the goal of leaving clients with both working solutions and the engineering capabilities to innovate independently. The forward-deployed engineer model, pioneered by Palantir, has become increasingly popular for managing AI deployments because relevant technology can be reused across projects while remaining tailored to each company's specific needs. OpenAI and Anthropic have recently launched their own similar ventures in partnership with private equity firms, valued at $4 billion and $1.5 billion respectively.
