
WindBorne Systems has raised $37 million Series B round to scale its weather balloons and AI forecasts.
AI techniques have improved weather forecasting to the point where simulations can run on laptops instead of requiring supercomputers. A startup that collects weather data using long-flying balloons has raised funding to commercialize these better forecasts by helping businesses and organizations use the predictions for decision-making. Historically, private companies struggled to extract value from weather data because integrating forecasts into business operations was expensive and difficult, but AI tools are making that integration more efficient. The company's main customers are currently government agencies, though it is now working to expand into the private sector, particularly investment funds that use weather data to predict commodity prices.
