
ChatGPT for Teens adds age-appropriate safety measures, parental controls, and learning tools designed to steer teens away from harmful content — and from using AI to cheat on their homework.
OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for teens that includes safety measures and educational features meant to reduce exposure to harmful content and discourage cheating. The launch comes after numerous lawsuits over AI chatbots' lack of safety measures, which have been linked to teen suicides and mental health concerns. The teen version includes a Study Mode that provides guiding questions and step-by-step support, homework reminders to discourage cheating, and parental controls that allow guardians to manage settings and receive safety notifications. The timing raises questions about why these protections were not included from the beginning, given that the original ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users before teen-specific safeguards were added.
