
OpenAI is building out the pieces of an alternative to the traditional app store model, turning ChatGPT into a place where software can be discovered and used by people and AI agents alike.
OpenAI announced features that integrate app discovery and usage directly into ChatGPT, allowing the chatbot to suggest relevant apps during conversations and enable users to connect and use those apps without leaving the interface. The company also introduced autonomous AI agents called Dots that can execute tasks across connected apps on their own cloud infrastructure, shifting the model from users selecting and downloading individual applications to agents handling tool selection. These changes aim to disrupt the traditional app store model by making ChatGPT itself the primary platform for discovering and launching software, supported by features like "Sign in with ChatGPT" that let users bring their identity and AI allowance across third-party applications. An enterprise marketplace was also launched where partners can offer their services, with eligible customers able to apply their OpenAI commitment toward approved partner software.
