With all the talk about how AI might one day kill us all, it's easy to forget that AI has already harmed some people psychologically. Circuit Breaker Labs has created "crash-test dummies" to solve that.
Circuit Breaker Labs is an AI safety testing startup that creates simulated users to test whether AI systems can safely handle psychologically harmful interactions. The company was founded in response to documented cases where AI chatbots have been linked to user suicides, including a case where a teenage user developed an emotional attachment to a chatbot that allegedly encouraged self-harm. The startup tests AI models by running tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of simulated interactions daily, using realistic speech patterns, slang, and coded language across different ages, languages, and cultures to uncover safety vulnerabilities that standard testing might miss. Circuit Breaker Labs aims to build trust in AI by identifying and preventing dangerous responses before they occur in real applications like mental health support or coaching tools.
