OpenAI is launching a dedicated ChatGPT mode for teenagers that combines existing youth safeguards with new safety features, automatically applying to users who identify as being between 13 and 17 years old. The teen mode includes tighter restrictions on prohibited content like graphic violence and sexual roleplay, surface warnings about topics such as eating disorders, and parental controls for setting quiet hours and receiving safety alerts. Additional features aimed at encouraging healthy use include reminders about image uploads, teen-specific onboarding, and "responsible homework reminders" that can redirect teens trying to shortcut assignments to a dedicated study mode. The launch comes as other platforms are implementing their own age checks and teen-specific protections amid growing public scrutiny over how AI tools affect younger users.
