Anthropic has nearly stopped hiring junior staff because AI agents now work six times as many hours

Anthropic is hiring fewer and fewer junior staff in technical roles. The share of junior positions among new hires dropped from 27 to 9 percent since early 2025. By August 2026, AI agents across the company were already logging six times as many hours as humans. Get smart on it

An AI company has significantly reduced hiring for junior technical positions while its AI agents handle an increasing share of work. According to the company's internal study, junior positions in technical departments fell from 21 percent to 14 percent since early 2025, with new junior hires dropping even more sharply to 9 percent, while AI agents logged six times as many work hours as human employees by August 2026. This matters because researchers warn that entry-level roles are where skilled professionals develop their expertise over years, and replacing these positions with AI could create a shortage of experienced talent in fields like software engineering, financial analysis, and legal research between 2030 and 2045. The company acknowledges it represents a special case as an extremely AI-heavy software company, and the broader economy has not yet shown measurable productivity gains from AI.
