Rare books are incredibly valuable for training LLMs, since these models have already trained on whatever's available online.
Will a major library or cultural institution publicly condemn Amazon's rare book destruction by September 2026?

Amazon is purchasing rare books, removing their spines, and scanning them to use as training data for artificial intelligence language models. The company needs enormous amounts of text to train these systems, and rare or out-of-print books offer a valuable source of material that has not yet been ingested from the internet. Agents now run across cloud servers, on-prem datacenters, laptops, Raspberry Pis and Android devices. Letting them share tools usually means exposing internal scripts, LLM endpoints or private APIs to the public internet. SAM’s alternative is a zero-config, zero-trust P2P overlay — closer to a private VPN, but scoped to age
